    What is taper pins?

A taper pin is a fastener used in mechanical engineering. They are steel rods with one end having a slightly larger diameter than the other. Standard inch-sized taper pins have a taper on diameter of 1:48[1] while metric ones have a taper of 1:50.[2] (A 1:48 taper means that one end of a 4-foot-long bar (48 inches) will be 1 inch smaller in diameter than the other end, or a 1⁄4-inch taper over a 1-foot length. A 1:50 taper means that one end of a half-meter long bar (50 cm) will be 1 cm smaller in diameter than the other end, or a 2 mm taper over a decimeter length.)

    Product Features

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT FEATURES OF A TAPER PIN?
Taper pins are distinguishable by the gradual decrease of diameter over the length of the pin. Additional features include measurement type, head type, material, microfinish, and finish.

Taper is the gradual decrease in thickness of the pin. While custom applications exist, the common rise over run of inch taper pins is 1/4 inch rise for every 12 inches of length and 1mm rise for every 50mm of length for metric pins.

Measurement type for taper pins consists of either inch (imperial) or metric. Knowing if a taper pin is metric or inch is important as reference points for measuring diameter and length differ slightly.
Head types can be categorized by three common styles: standard, internal thread, and external thread.
Standard taper pins are simple in design with each end featuring a slight radius. Standard taper pins are intended for through‑hole applications so that they can be driven out with a hammer and punch.
Internal Threads have tapped threads in the large end of metric and inch taper pins. The internal threads allow the taper pin to be installed into blind holes while providing a means for removal with the assistance of a bolt and slide hammer. These pins are ideal in blind hole, low clearance applications.
External Threads are machined on the large end of the taper pin. They often provide an anchor for removal; however, they can also be used for attaching additional parts of an assembly. External threads can be found on metric and inch taper pins and are great for applications without low clearance restrictions.

    Applications

An example of tapered pin used to lock two shafts together.
For body piercing, see Taper insertion pin.
Some taper pins have a male screw thread on the small end that is designed to project through the hole and retain the pin with a washer and a nut. Other pins are threaded on both ends, on the thick end to pull the pin out with the same nut that holds the pin in place.

Taper pin reamers are designed to prepare the hole for taper pins. Metric taper reamers are designated by the small diameter. For example, a 2 mm taper pin reamer has a 1.9 mm small end (2 mm nominal size) and a 2.86 mm large end.[3]

A form of taper pin that precedes these standards is the clock pin, used to accurately and repeatably register parts of a clock to one another. Clock pins do not have a standardised taper, but they generally have a more pronounced taper than the standard engineering pins. The size or gauge is defined by diameter at each end, and the length. The holes are not reamed, but are prepared using a clockmakers' cutting broach to taper a drilled hole.
